Trying out new handle scales on my knife, going is slow but I like it so far. Any opinions welcome.

After both sides are finished and sanded to shape I will do some file work on the liners and spine.

Looking good so far. Are you going to drill out for the pins and layard? What kind of wood are you using?

Here's a stock Schrade 60T

I think it looks great. Oak?

The original USA knives had a lanyard hole as well, but the pin layout is nothing like that Chinese import. I'm not sure it needs a lanyard though; the 6OT came with a sheath.

It is white oak I found in an attic a left over pile of floor boards. The wood has to be my age or older from the huge fir roof beams cut to rough cut to real 2x10 and 2x4 and I am 50. I have the original sheath of the knife and I think I am only going to put the lanyard whole and rocker pin back in. I even plan to check out a kiosk at the local mall and see if they can engrave a bear head on the bolsters. That is way beyond my skill level but I will design the head.

PCL, in case you don't have an example handy, here is the pin pattern that would be authentic to your knife. Photo from Collectors Of Schrade website:

It looks unreal!
Tell me more about "white oak" is it oak or fir? out of interest.
Are the scales pinned or simply glued?

Looks like the makings of a nice mod! I agree that the pins should be put through the wood. Simple epoxy or CA is not enough to hold that wood in place. If that knife is ever dropped those covers would probably fall off from the shock. I can understand, though, if you do not want to take the knife apart, that can be intimidating if you've never done it before.

However, that is part of the fun and learning process.

Please show pics of your finished knife!

Here is the other side with pin holes drilled, this wood is very dry from years in attic but I do not want to add resin. What would be another alternative, BLO, lemon oil, water any help appreciated. Love the wood but it splits easy and I do not want to give up on it.

The knife looks great. What about some Danish oil on the scales. Just an idea please try on a scrap piece of wood first.

If the oak does not work out I will try hickory, I really like hickory. I just do not understand why you do not see alot of others customized.

Well, I had to make new handles as that old oak split on me so I got some new hobby wood at lowes. Oak again and did a little file work.

First time on file work, not the neatest but I was doing this on my knee and watching tv. Needs more sanding and polishing but slowly and surely.

Okay reached the final point in my estimation, the brass I left with a brushed look and the handles finished in acrylic floor cleaner with a satin finish. Decided to grind down the center pin and just add the lanyard hole.

I really liked the way it turned out, the scratches on the bolsters has since been removed so it looks even better. I have 2 7OT's but they both are the carbon bladed ones so I'll leave them alone. I almost picked up an LB7 but the springs were either broken or something, but I do want to change the handle on a 7OT.
