Watching the video posted of the blacksmiths forging the swedish axes pushed me to break out a mini hydraulic press I built. I'm still playing around with dies/ holders- haven't got that worked out yet.
It sure is easier on my arm- especially when making ball peen hammers into heads.
I brought the press to my friends shop. The compressor I have is so loud it drives me crazy in my garage. I was able to rough out some heads- still have plenty of work to finish them. Brought them home on a old tollbox full of vermiculite- to anneal - also safer to handle.
. Thanks for looking

Here's the press, and a hawk I forged from 1 " x1" 4140. I brought the Hawk to help answer the "watcha making" questions.
I was trying to upset 1 1/4" round pieces I cut from an old axle- kept bending in the middle. Still working on that.
I cut down a old import sledge head I had laying around - ends will be used in the press as dies- center will be mounted as a drifting post.

Thats very cool Visitor. Really nice shapes on those heads. It's great to see your gear, thanks for showing us.

Best regards

That hawk on the last pic looks great!!!
You did a great job there and I hope to see more of that!

Great job, if you want to upset only heat the end you are upsetting and only about as much as you want to upset..Say and inch to an inch and a half..Get it hot too, high yellow if possible.

raybateson,
No, just a hobby. I have a list of friends that want me to make them one. If I got better / faster at it maybe.
I don't know what makers value their time at... I have way too much work into anthing I've made so far to break even at what I see hawks going for. With that in mind- I make what I want when I can- gift or token charge to friends.
