I Ran into a guy from a oilfeild winch truck company. He was about to dispose of about 30 feet of 1.25 inch all steel cable non galvinized. It was a role end that would not fit on the winch.
So for a dozen beer I got the cable and today welded up a billet. Heated it, fluxed it, twisted it, then forged it into a bar with one fold.
After cleaning up the billet on the grinder as I normally do with damascus I ground a bevel on one end and put it in the ferric for about 5 min.
No discernable patturn, just a few faint white lines. I have always done this on regular damascus and the patturn comes right out. What did I do wrong? Anything special that has to be done to cable?
