First what is a good gauge wire to work with(easiest)?

Second, what is better to work with? Half hard or Dead soft?

Third, does anyone know of a good place to buy some?

The wire is a ribbon. I suppose it may go by gauge though. I like .010, or .008 x .040, in fine silver. You need much experience to go smaller, or heavier, and the pure silver forms easier. You can get it from many of the muzzle loader builders supply houses.

I generally like .008 and .010. I also use .012, but it seems that the higher you fo in thickness the easier it is to get a crack in the wood, especially with letters or tight scrolls. I recently picked up several ounces from Rio Grande, their staff is very helpful. their tool and equipment catalog is full of nice toys, and also has listings for their raw materials, including the .999 fine silver strip.
