Beautiful and simple-looking wire handle reveals detail work, near the pivot, necessary to make this folder function well (welding/joining of the two pieces of wire and grooving for the blade to pivot and to rest on). I showed a set to my three-year-old Granddaughter and she was able to open and close both the knife (not really sharp so not to worry) and the fork. All three pieces fit her hands just right. She was tickled and charmed by this set as am I. Wonderful work from out of the past.

I performed my usual, SOP, routine with this set from the jump: Visual inspection of function and surface issues, alcohol bath with flexing of moving parts/joints while in alcohol, dry and blow out with compressed air, soft cotton rub down and surface treatment with molecular bonding rust preventative (TufGlide).

With the leather I used cleaner/preservative on the outside and used compressed air to treat the inside then a soft cotton rub down.

I get good results with the metal IMHO. However, the leather seems unchanged so perhaps I need something else, another product or step (I use Propert's All-Purpose Cleaner & Conditioner).

A cool old set! The spoom is often missing from those. As for the leather, go to the sheath makers' forum here and they can give you pointers on leather treatments.

Thank you for the kind words C.

What I don't know about leather care would fill the Library of Congress. Thank you for the tip. I used to bake my leather baseball mitt in the oven with a ball in the sweet spot, soaked in mink oil and tied with string!!! :)

Nice set.

What are you looking to do to the leather? I've always used Neat's foot oil for leather, but that can sometimes darken the leather a bit, so before you try anything in particular, bear in mind what the stuff will do to your piece.

Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the tip. I'll look for that leather treatment.

I'm interested in cleaning and preserving the leather. One of the leather carriers/pouch, for the Schrade Chow Set, is quite dry and makes me think it could crack when flexed as the flap is opened and closed. I'd like to think that my ownership of any vintage item would enhance its longevity. So the next owner could get the same kick out of having it as I get.

Nice set.
