) McMaster-Carr only has it up to 5/8" in diameter. So who sells it by the foot in the 3/4" to 1" diameter sizes?-Guy Thomas

Try a farm and implement supply. Where ever tractors are sold.

I haven't done it since I don't have the need but my son worked at crane company one summer and they periodically "re-cable" their cranes. I have no idea what the quality or type of cable they use.

Look for a riggers supply, or a constuction co. might have some damaged chokers, they have to throw them away or have them made shorter by the rigging supply co. If you find a rigging company they might sell you cutoffs for scrap price. Talk nice.

MSC has large size steel cable of the sort needed for wire Damascus in their catalog. The new stuff actually is very reasonably priced per foot; I mean it is not like you are going to be buying a couple of hyndred feet, or are You? That is a lot of knives!
The new cable has the advantage of being of known composition, and clean.
