What I am looking for is advice on a cost effective Internet Firewall via hardware. The guys at work recommended a commercial off the shelf FIREWALL ROUTER. I can't really tell the difference in the models that cost $30 or $70 from what I have found on-line. I am leaning towards a Netgear solution because of past good experiences and against Linksys because of bad. I don't know where D-Link stands in the fray but, I have read a few good things about them on-line.

I have a software firewall, Norton Anti-Virus and I have been running Microsoft's Beta Anti-spyware solution. I have a Motorola Surf Broad cable model for access to broadband. I will not use wireless. Heck, if I wanted wireless I would use one of the multiple networks that my neighbors supply.

I want a hardware solution that fits between this computer and the Internet at large that will make life difficult for the scum of the Earth that want to do bad things to my computer and my identity. Anything I can do that isn't too costly that will insulate me from these low life's is a step in the right direction. Of course, I want to stay on-line ;) and continue to access my financial and other accounts on-line in a safe manner.

Is a Netgear RP614 a good place to start? TIA!

Can only tell you about the specific ones I've used, but I hope it helps; currently using a Linksys WRT54G (http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=35&prid=601) (wireless can be turned off, includes 4 wired ports) which was very easy to set-up. Includes a NAT firewall and have never had any problems coming through to any of my machines (work from home so this is _very_ important).

This is the second Linksys router I've had and both have done exactly what I expected them to.

Some of my colleagues use D-Link routers and all of them have had one problem or another.
