Wireless and notebooks question

Okay, I'm basically computer ignorant, a dinosaur if you will...
I don't have cable or internet at home, but I do have a laptop.. with a wireless chip in it that allows me to access Wi-Fi. But, due to sidejacking, I'm leary of using the local internet cafes or Wi-Fi sites available to me.

Now, as I understand it, services like Clearwire broadcast over a different frequency than Wi-Fi services. They claim this is more secure and they provide some protection through their service as well. And as I unsderstand it, so does some of the bigger companies like ATT, etc.

Given that I am not a big time user of the 'net (heck, I have the most basic cellphone service and rarely, if ever, exceed the few minutes I do pay for!), what service would y'all recommend for me'n'my laptop that would work locally well here in Seattle and in places across the country, like if I head to Blade again this year??? Basically, I want something secure, inexpensive, reliable and moronically simple to use.

Any advice? Experiences w/particular carriers??

Thanks in advance guys!

I am not a geek, but my son is, I use Webroot firewall, it has an option to make your computer invisible to anyone else using same wireless access point. As for the Wireless card, from the cell companies, Most are NOT Cheap, a plan for my salesman runs about 63 a month just for the data card and unlimited minutes on it. It is with Verizon. Good Luck on your quest to be cord free.

If your looking for something to use outside of a hotspot, you need to see who has good coverage in your area.I have ATT and there aren't many places that I go that I don't have good service although the service at my home in NY is very inconsistent, which gets very annoying sometimes.Att says their working on it and I do know that their newest service is within 10mi of that location,so I'm hoping it gets to me soon.If your looking for wireless that you can use at a hotspot, look into a good firewall and you should be ok with what you have.
