I have a first generation Microsoft Wireless network in my home. It works great! I have heard that newer routers are much better. Can I just plug in a faster one, or will I have set up a whole new network? Also if put a Netgear router on microsoft network, would this work? Thanks

uhhhhhhh....

ok first assumption, you are using a microsoft router?
second assumption, it is open (not encrypted)?

first question, what type of internet connection do you have?
second question, Are you using a laptop or desktop, built in wireless adapter or external? (I guess that was two)

Very simple explination, you can use any brand wireless router(I recommend Linksys) for your wireless network.

Getting brands and parts and the current setup would be very helpful in understanding your question.

comet, Are you asking if your Windows network will be ruined with a new router? All I had to do to set one up was put computers on the same domain. I'm not sure what you mean by putting a netgear router on a microsoft network. As far as newer routers being better, I think you'll notice a good bump in speed by stepping up to a 802.11G router from an old B router. However, a new standard (802.11N) is coming to market that you might want to wait for. Companies have already launched routers that support it in fact, though it isn't even finalized. Remember you will also need new wireless cards that support a newer standard for your computers to use the higher speeds, though pretty much all routers are backwards compatible.

The wireless N draft gear isn't very stable yet. MiMo G is the best for range and consistency right now. N is not far away.

I have a small Linksys B/G router I use at the house. It has four built-in ethernet jacks for wired connections as well as the wireless option. I haven't opted for a range extender or long-range antenna yet but probably will sometime in the future. I have my PC hooked up via ethernet cable to the router and have my laptop "roaming" around my house. If there is any question about a brand you should purchase, I'd recommend Linksys.

Hi:

I am using a Microsoft first generation router
I have security setting on...so that others can not snoop.
I have a Motorola Cable Modem
Dell Desktop Dell is the base station computer. We connect to the network with Dell Laptops with built-in wireless receivers.

I thought I would get a newer Router to speed things up. I think Microsoft is out the wirelss business.

I think your best bet is to get an 802.11G router since the laptops probably have cards that support G. Of course you should make sure first, but most any newer laptop should. With MiMo you'd have to get new cards in all the laptops which would get quite expensive. I also have a Linksys router. It works great now that I got the high gain antennas for it, but before I did I had an odd problem where the throughput would drop to nothing randomly and websites would start timing out. It would do this for short periods (maybe 1/2 minute) and go back to normal by itself. It also stays connected at a steady 54 mbps now, while it spent more time around 24 without the antennas. The only thing I wish it had was support for bridging the wireless and wired computers.
