Wireless Routers

I'm thinking of getting a new wireless router. Reading the specs and reviews gives me a headache. My current router is an old Hawking. It works most of the time,
but it seems to be getting tired. It's about 50 feet from where the router would be to the furthest spot where I might use my laptop with 3 or 4 walls in between.

Any ideas?

I've been running a Netgear N600 for around 8 months now with zero problems. Setup was a breeze. I'm streaming Netflix with a wireless blu-ray player located about 50 feet away in another room with a good signal. Price range is 60-$80

I was always a Linksys supporter,
but you know,in retrospect, they were all problems.
I had linksys hubs,routers,wifi routers,switches,all failed.
I have moved to D-Link,initially because of the price,
but the quality is really good.
I have had to (very infrequently) unplug and replug it in
to restart it,but other than that,no issues at all.
We have about 20 devices in the house that grabs the signal
(games,phones,computers ipads,psp's etc)
Setup is very easy, including the port forwarding.
Range was really good,1floor up and down,50ft front and back.
I will not buy linksys again.(unless they really change quality/performance)

used to use netgear but went to broadband because of a poor IP. might want to stay with extended guarantee/help calls. nothing like having a company tech help you with problems. forget how much time is included initially but the service is well worth it

Another Netgear N600 here. I have zero problems anywhere in my house. My router is located in my basement and I still get perfect signal upstairs and in all rooms. I can also stream full HD to my Xbox. Its a good router that I would recommend to anyone.

Thanks for the replies. I went to Newegg. I was surprised to see that the highest rated router was the Linksys WRT54GL.

In looking through the negative reviews I wonder how many are from people who are technologically challenged? ;)

Had that linksys router
radio went out in it after about a year

I think its so popular because Linksys has been around so long.
Linksys was one of the first "entry level routers" available way back when.
'Brand loyalty and marketing is what Im thinking.

As for those giving negative reviews, dont know, but me,
Ive been fooling with computers since I started poking and peeking sprites.

From what I have seen the WRT54 series of routers was very customizable, with custom firmware and the like that gave it features typically only found (at the time) on much more expensive routers. Specifically DD-WRT was used to hack these routers, although I believe there was another option known as "tomato" or something like that. I have had one for over five years going strong, however it too is on its last legs and an upgrade is needed. Having purchased several routers recently through work, I find that the Cisco Linksys models work well, and offer many of the same options that were seen on the older customizable WRT54 series but without a hugely increased price tag.
