So I am at the point that all I need for my grinder is the VFD. The wheels are on and lined up, the platen is square and attached, the issue now is power. I found out last night that the house had a fire in it well before I moved in and the wiring was all redone and that the house has a 100 amp service. I still need to crawl into the basement, its unfinished with a trap door entrance, and check if there panel to make sure there is room for a 230V/30 amp breaker.

Is there anything I should be looking for besides space in the panel? And how would I verify that the house is in fact 100 amp service? If I can do this it really makes my VFD choice and selection much easier because I could then just grab a Teco FM50 and be done with it:D

So I just got out of the basement and was quite happy with what I found. Aside from all the cobwebs I was able to confirm the 100amp service then I noticed this funny looking outlet down there with nothing plugged into it.

Turns out that the drier plug is just sitting there unused because the house has a 120V apartment size drier. There are 2 240V breakers, one for the stove (50 amp, bottom right of panel) and the drier outlet 30 amp top right of panel) so it looks like I am in business:thumbup: Now do I just run a long plug to the VFD or do I relocate the outlet to the room I will be working in. No there is no way I am moving the "shop" into the basement, lie I said it is a trap door to get down there and it is only 18"X18" it would be a real PITA to get tools down there and for me to climb in and out of it too:p

If the wiiring and panel is new, this should be easy.

And how would I verify that the house is in fact 100 amp service?

The panel will have one main breaker and then a sub panel with lots of little ones.
The big breaker will have the number 100 on it..

I s there anything I should be looking for besides space in the panel?

Take note of what type of panel it is.
Look for a trade name like federal and copy the model number down

You need 2 breaker spaces side by side so one side picks up one hot, and the other side picks up the other hot.

For wiring 220, you need 2 breaker spaces.
When you buy a new breaker, make sure it is the right one for that panel type.
Some screw in, some snap in, everybody has a diffrent system and you need to match it.

edited to add, I was typing while you were, nice simple.

Now do I just run a long plug to the VFD

or do I relocate the outlet to the room I will be working in.

I would relocate.

I would remove the outlet from that box.

copy the same wire (size and #, ther are newer plastic insulations)
make the connection inside that box and use a cover plate.

run wire to your location and add a box, put that outlet in it.

Get a dryer type plug and wire for your grinder.

Box,
cover plate
Wire
Marettes . wire nuts
steeples to nwil the wire down with.
plug and wire for your grinder
(one piece moulded units are available
I like to scrounge one on garbage day from ovens that get tossed..)
