I've recently been bitten by the vintage axe bug and am having trouble discerning between the different patterns. I was wondering if anybody could post some pics of an actual axe in a Wisconsin pattern. Next to a Michigan or western pattern so as to point out the differences would be great. Any definitive pattern, really, I'm still not that sure on what a Michigan or western pattern is for certain. I think I know a swamping pattern pretty well, but that is about it. I can't figure out the actual advantages of one pattern over the next except maybe personal preference. Is one better for hardwood? Softwood? Maple, Cedar, Felling, Bucking, limbing, etc...
Btw. I am speaking of double bit axes for the most part, but would love to see a single bit in Wisconsin as well. Compared to something like a Dayton, or Michigan. I've found some axe pattern charts, but often I feel like the axes I have fall in middle of two patterns. Especially Michigan and Western. I am assuming this is due to the sharpening and grinding over the years?
My camera took a dump, and I still have a flip phone, when I get an opportunity I will post some pics of the heads I've picked up over the last couple of years.
