A while back I was watching some tube videos about various slip joint knives and I cam across a few that had a guy talking about his knife , very knowledgeable (cant recall who it was or the knife) but when he opened up the knife he only opened it a bit then pushed it the rest of the way open with his finger pushing on the blade. this interested me as it dident cut his finger and he did it more than once. Is this something you wise old slip joint masters do? fyi I don't do this. but it looks cool as can be on camera.

Sounds like how Mike Latham opens his knives. Freaks me out every time I see him do it in the vids on his web site.

My guess as well, and my reaction is the same.

(a) he has never opened a sharp knife.
(b) he files down the edge before every video
(c) See, he is an idiot, and there are more like him. I witnessed a dud checking the sharpness of a blade with his thumb from tang to tip. good thing the knife was as dull as his mind, else the clerk would have had a mess to clean.

No fanboyism here afishhunter but this is Mike Latham, owner of CollectorKnives, I'm sure he's opened plenty a sharp knife and I'm guessing he just has very tough skin.
(I just opened up my Opinel using the same method)

No need to call someone an idiot.

Mike spent 7 years in a Tibetan monastery where he plunged his thumbs into sand, then gravel, then finally solid granite, 16 hours a day, only stopping to sleep and eat.

He had to know that knife was dull, the video would have ended differently had it been sharp.

My grandfather could drive a nail 1" into a 2x4 by placing it between his fingers with his hand closed into a fist (nailhead resting against the palm). My childhood best friend could put a push pin fully into he flesh of his arm without wincing.

Some people have tough skin and can do things normally not recommended for mere "mortals".
I agree that the term "idiot" is far from appropriate or accurate.

I was unaware of his owning Collector Knives. He probably has opened some sharp knives then.
Considering the fact that there are a multitude of "people" who after watching his videos will think the way he opens a knife is the " proper" way, and in all likelyhood will receive a severe cut when they open a sharp knife, he is opening himself to a potential liability suit by someone for damages to their thumb and medical bills.
There are, after all, a lot of (shall we say ... ambulance chasing dollar hungry rip-off dishonest) personal injury "attorneys" in the court system.

Well this seems to be in a downward spiral. Let us pull the covers over this one and let it sink into the depths of the archives.
