Wish I learned to sharpen knife before I needed

You can go to Lowe's and buy some basic sharpeners right on the end-cap by the Tool Section.
Smith's and some other brands...

Looking back, I was really bad at sharpening for the longest time. I could only get certain knives to a ok working edge. Half way through last year it clicked and I have been able to whittle hairs with any steel. I gave up a lot of my favorite knives back then because I could not sharpen them as good as the others. Wish I would have kept them!!!

I've only been sharpening by hand for a couple months and i think I'm alright. I can get all my knives hair popping sharp. I'm going to buy a jewellers loupe to make me even more keen.

I think I need the practice and a better understanding of getting a more durable edge. My work knife really gets put through the ringer, and is usually dull after only a week, not sure if its just what I put it through or I'm sharpening at too high of an angle.

Spyderco sharpmaker is pretty fool proof, add Diamond/CubicBoronNitride rods and you should be good for 95% of common steels

800 grit sandpaper on a mouse pad and a sharpie will get it done. If you don't have any on hand go to the auto parts store. It really is as easy as sanding off the marker from edge on both sides evenly. Check out maintenance section. Lots of advice there. Stickies too.

I'd pick up some basic sharpening supplies. You might need something to occupy yourself during the storm.

Now the storm is coming. Too late.

I am a very recent student of learning how to sharpen knives. I have beat the snot out of my body and code 4 for preparing homes for my business, for family and lastly my own home last night. The blade was screaming no more yesterday after cutting through 50 or pieces of carpet to shove under my step dads warehouse doors to help keep the water out since his business is about a half mile from the ocean.

So after a couple of 14 hour days yesterday I still decided to sharpen my knife just wind down and try and relax. Wish I would have done a before photo the poor tip on this knife was shredded.

I would not say I am anywhere near a expert at this point but I can easily shave my hair when done.

It doesn't get much better than that.
