I m thinking about getting a coldsteel tomahawk was wondering if any of you guys had any experience with them and which one you would recommend
thanks chris

I prefer the Trailhawk, versatile, light, and the best all around user in my mind.

If you want it for fighting or throwing only then options change.

What is your main planned use for it?

Also, check out the axe, hawk forum here. Lots of great info there on the CS line.

The trail hawk seems to have a very good following, however I would look into the new pipehawk as well. It is a little bit larger and to me seems like a better camp tool. Trail hawk to me seems smaller, lighter and more of a fighting hawk.

If you search CS trailhawk you will come up with plenty of glowing reviews. Good luck on the search for the "perfect" hawk.

The trail hawk is a good thrower and a reasonable camp ax, the hammer poll is good for driving tent pegs etc. I very much like the new Frontier for throwing and it has a wider edge for cutting than the trail. The new 21 inch haft comes on the frontier the old 19 inch comes with the trail. I love the longer haft for throwing. The new spike is heavyish but it's a great thrower (both ways) and sticks very deep spike forward or blade forward. Haven't tried the new "pipe hawk".

I had a Trail Hawk and it was too small and light for my intended purpose, which was chopping and splitting wood. I gave it to my brother-in-law and got the bigger, heavier Rifleman's Hawk, which does exactly what I wanted once I sharpened it and smoothed the rough casting. I also got the longer handle.

Basically, Cold Steel hawks are a great way to get a decent quality one at a decent price.

Don't disregard the Norse hawk either. The shape of the head allows you to choke up and get your hand right behind the cutting edge for fine work and ulu-type tasks. I've heard it also throws well. Also check out Ft. Turner Forge's Norse hawk. They're slightly pricier, but made in America. Also contact Steve at Coal Creek Forge, who makes some of the best custom hawks out there.

+1 on the trail hawk. I have only had mine a month, but it has done every thing I have asked it to do.

My Cold Steel Pipe Hawk just showed up in the mail yesterday and I had a chance to give it some throws. I really like the feel of it and it cut through a dying oak of mine pretty easy.

If it came to a toss up of trail or pipe, I'd say get the pipe. It's got great usability and it's only a little bit heavier.
