I am getting a knife from Jimmy Lile as some of you already know, but I was thinking of getting sawteeth, that costs extra, do you think of this addition as an incentive or obstacle?? the knife is to be used as a survival and camp knife..

Thanks.

Absolutely not. Saw teeth were originally on Air Force survival knives for sawing the skin of an aircraft to escape. They have no business on a surivial knife not intended for that specific purpose, other than just looking cool to those who do not know better.

Nix the sawteeth, especially if you intend to press down on the back of the blade to cut through stuff. Get a Swiss Army Knife with a saw blade, works very good!

Also, if you have a sawtooth back, you can't put pressure on the EDGE to saw very well....so they might look cool, but in reality they are not very handy...

They also cause weakness in the blade. Where is most of the strength in a large fixed blade? The spine. When I ordered a knife from Jerry Hossom, I inquired about decorative file work. He recommended against it, as it could cause stress risers in the steel when the blade is subjected to flexing. And that's just minor filework. Saw teeth take big chunks out of the spine. TOPS uses only a couple of teeth on some of their knives, I believe to help tear through things the blade doesn't cut easily (the aforementioned aircraft skin or other sheet metal, etc).

PS, have you had a look at the Deathwind? Excellent knife. You'll love the Lile, no matter which you get. The craftsmanship is superb.

PPS, I think you were getting one with the hollow handle, right? There are small pocket wire saws that cut much better than any saw-backed knife...

I wouldn't put saw teeth on anything but a machete. The advantage comes when the blade is long and thin. To avoid weakening the blade you need the blade to be broad and not very hard. A machete would fill the bill. On the other hand, a plane machete will generally work in place of a saw, so why bother with teeth?

A collapsible Swede saw is a useful addition to your camp kit if all you're going to saw is wood. I carry a Buck game saw when hunting (don't know if they still make them); very useful. The saw on a SAK is useful albeit kind of small.
