Knives in the news:

http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/9306175/detail.html

" . . .It happened in shopping center in the 500 block of Sweetwater Road in Spring Valley. A woman in her 70s was walking outside the Albertson's supermarket there at about 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday when three teenagers grabbed her purse and agenda, according to San Diego County Sheriff's deputies. A witness had seen the teens get out of a black Camaro, and when he saw them snatch the woman's belongings, he slashed one of the front tires of the car with a pocketknife in an attempt to prevent them from getting away. . . ."

Pretty cool! Can anyone ID the knife?

Cheers to that good man! I'd buy him a beer if I knew him.

It's always good to hear a positive use of a knife being portrayed in the media.

Good man! He even opens the blade slowly and with 2 hands for camera. It looked flickable, but he was using discretion--he could have even done one handed thumbstud opening. He's a good ambassador of our hobby to the rest of the world.

Back at the office, we're trying to figure out what his knife is too. I think I see a nail nick in addition to a thumbstud. Looks to be a drop point blade.

Yessssssssssssssssssssssssss! One for the good guys!!!!!!!!!

doew anyone else think thats an awfully large knife to "legally" carry in the PRK. Its amazing the officers let him keep it.

There is no legal limit on blade lengths for legal type folders and I believe even fixed blades. Last time I checked it was technically legal to carry a sword around with you as long as it wasn't concealed though I doubt in reality you would get very far without being harassed by the Police.

Yes, in California a folder of any size is legal as long as it is not a switchblade ot balisong. You can even conceal a folder of any size-it does not have to be visable.

You can carry a fixed blade of any size as long as it is not concealed.

It is funny how many people (even cops) do not know this. I have people ask me if my knife is legal all of the time, and I have friends who have been hassled by cops are their folders for being over 4 inches and concealed.

Some cities have stricter laws, such as L.A.

Great story! Somebody ID that knife? What is it? The guy seems to handle it with great familiarity.

On a more technical note, i wonder which way the blade went into the tire. It would have trouble with the steel sidewall belts, for a radial tire would it be best to stab with the blade parallel to the wires, i.e. radially?

In my experience with punk drivers doing 80mph down residential blocks that are loaded with parents and kids in costume only knee high, that stop and chase someone down for yelling to slow down...but I digress, a BM 941 went into a moving tire (not fast but accelerating) with a single thrust and remove. I heard the officers measured a 3" gash in the treads. They also measured 25' of skid mark when jerky hit the brakes. Air loss was gradual over 5 minutes or so. :D Jerky decides to come back and cry about his tire at which point the officers promptly placed him in custody at the request of the 'rents.

According to the story 2 of the 3 were let off! Isn't theft illegal in California?

It's not very well written, but I don't think "The two other teenagers, both under 18, were released to their parents" means they were let off. I think it means they were released pending trial.

I'm pretty sure he did it while those thieves were coming back at the car.

Ya, It seems like they were the kind of idiots who go and leave the getaway car unnattended while they commit their crimes. Screw the tires, I woulda just hopped in that baby and drove off in their Camaro. Gain a purse, lose a car lmao.
