Like some of you other good folks, I jumoped at the opportunity of getting hold of one of Lisa's hand forged 'budget' hawks.

And like all of those lucky enough to have made the first list and and recieved them, I'm really glad I did!!

I picked it up on Saturday from the local post office. There was thankfully no delays, no customs or handling charges to pay :)

Here are some snaps I took last night I thought I'd share:

Some lovely rippling in that haft....pretty hard to capture with the camera.

Thanks for looking

You will be spoiled for ever having this as your first hawk. Many are like me and started with production hawks like the Cold Steels. Enjoy!

Maybe I'll get on the next list.
Have they forged a shallow concavity behind the edge and left the corners a little meatier?
Kind of looks like the half-moon some axe mavens insist should be filed on a new axe so the corners help to spring you out of a cut.

What a great tool, scruffuk! I really like that one! Are you planning to use it or should it be in you collection? The head makes a fine apperiance to me. The handle is also amazing :)

Kind regards
Andi

Er you kinda lost me on the terminology dude, sorry.

Although, if I understand what your saying, the cut outs purpose is to help with splitting/cutting?

Thank you Andi.

Yes, I don't believe in drawer queens. Tools should be used.
I have in fact split a little kindling with it already.

Maybe someday I'll even try and throw it....although a new handle will need to be made for that task.

I missed the first list. Going to wait a bit longer before I look elsewhere, as I want to take one on an upcoming camping trip. They do look well made.

It's just it looks like there's a semi-circular depression with the curved side toward the eye, making the blade behind the middle of the edge a little thinner than at the corners, or toe and heel, I should say.
Some people say it's necessary to thin the cheeks with a file in that area, but yours is thinned there already from the forge. Assuming my eyes aren't playing tricks on me.
I think the thinner middle is supposed to bite deeper and the thicker corners are supposed to make it easier to lever a stuck edge out of the wood. Anyway, it's a beautiful hawk.

Those are so nice that this sworn axe man is seriously considering a 'hawk. Judging by quality and price that's the best deal on a hawk there is, IMO.
