Woman's voice coming out of my computer speakers

As I'm sitting here working I was interrupted by a loud woman's voice emanating from the computer's speakers. She introduced herself and started talking about cooking, maybe chicken, possibly Perdue? I cut the power to the speakers and now she seems to be gone.

Is this the latest on internet advertising? If so, this was not well-targeted. Or am I losing it?:eek:
------------------------------
I guess I get it now. When I went to a different browser tab there was a Perdue ad sitting atop my email inbox. I hadn't clicked on it or even seen it yet, how annoying.

I've had similar experiences like that where there are random advertisements on the page I'm viewing. Sometimes you can just refresh the page and it will load another advertisement that doesn't have any annoying sounds attached.

That "adlock plus" filter seems to be a better solution though.

"NoScript" is another FireFox addon I highly recommend.

With it, you can restrict java scripts to only running from sites you want.

I HATE ads that yap at me. I keep multiple tabs open and one site started running those. I wasn't even on that tab! I no longer keep it open and I sent them email complaining about it.

Just what happened here and I like PEACE and QUIET so it was bizarre and offensive, intrusive, obnoxious....hum, all of the associations that would make one want to buy the product NEVER.

Did you get a response to your complaint?:D did it come in the form of a shrieking soprano sure to make your blood pressure soar?

I just don't get some things.

I actually did get a response, and a very thoughtfully written one, too. The problem, is the ad department basically rents out space for the customer to use as they see fit, and some customers buy into the "there is no bad advertising" idea. Bleep them. :p

What annoys me isn't the rare but obnoxious practice. It's that if we don't complain, it won't be so rare. Technological solutions are great. I block pop-ups myself. But ultimately, the advertisers will behave better if they realize they will lose our attention, not gain it, by being slobs.

I sit up till 4:00 in the morning or later sometimes and having "CONGRATULATIONS !!! !!! !!! YOU HAVE JUST WON A NEW COMPUTER !!! !!! !!!" go off in my ear is almost enough to make me smash a speaker. :grumpy:

Could it be interference from a local CB radio, taxi office or emergency service radio?

I used to be a police officer here in the UK, and the fruit machine in our second-floor canteen used to pick up VHF broadcasts from our patrol cars' radios!

i was thinking the same thing maximus. we used to talk sideband year ago and all of the neighbors would know when we fired up the radio (500 watts). when we keyed the microphone any tv show or radio station they had on broadcast whatever we said.
i use avant browser which has some neat tools. it allows for different items to be disabled including SOUNDS. i disable everything except pictures for browsing but when i'm on bladeforums i leave scripts enabled and allow popups so i can get private messages.

A third for me on radio interference. I was a DJ on our college radio station (a long time ago in a galaxy far far away). One day I got a call saying they liked our music, but what frequecy were we on? I told them, then asked how they knew they liked our music if they did not know the frequency. They said they lived about half a mile away and were picking us up on their TV. This from a station with all of 3,000 watts of power. (had to feed the hampsters every hour.)

This is interesting because this was the first possibility that crossed my mind and I was so happy that when I restarted the speakers I didn't hear anything. Of course when I flipped back a few tabs on the browser and saw that one of the pages had re-loaded with a chicken ad I knew that it was the internet. But I didn't figure that out until I made my first post.

Maybe one of you radio experts can tell me what it means when the AM/FM radio makes static noises from time to time when it is turned off. Sometimes the noise is loud enough to be heard in the next room. And how is it that we hear intermittent radio broadcast when the radio is turned off?

My PC speakers pick up a local religious radio station on a regular basis. The PC can be off and you can hear the voices. I've gotten used to it but when I look at certain sites and I hear gospel in the background I feel a bit dirty.

If you leave your cell phone near any kind of speaker this will happen when the cell phone checks in with the system. The cell phone communicates with the system every so often, even if you are not using it. The radio signal from the cell phone is strong enough to cause the static, even if the speaker is not energized by its radio etc.

Couldn't say about picking up regular radio broadcast with no power unless you live awful close to a broadcast tower (like next door). Add: THis is more likely to happen with AM than FM

There are so many electronic gadgets in our homes today that interference is an ever growing problem ! If you are a Ham as I am you may get blamed since they see your antenna ! It's more likely to be cheap equipment like a $ 9.95 phone . It can be funny , irritating or serious. One area in NJ had a problem if called 911 you got the operator but also the nearby radio station !

a friend gave ma an old am-fm radio that i hooked up in my room not too long after hooking up our cb radio. mom got on the cb the next morning and scared the crap out of me. she came through the speakers of the radio with the power off and even lit up lights inside the radio from the power put out by the cb. one neighbor woman even said we came across on her electric stove. this woman was an alcoholic so its hard to tell if she was actually hearing us or voices in her head.:D
