Temperatures hovered around 90 degrees Fahrenheit…water was scarce, but the class went swimmingly well!

This was the first all-women’s survival class done on the west coast.
Instructors Hugh Coffee, Patrick Rollins, Reza Allah-Bakhshi, and I were on hand.

Saddest camp ever

Trail Snack-Yucca flowers

Yucca cordage

Looking for more food

Nopales

Searching for water using water indicators (pants, trees)

Shade

Instructors Reza and Patrick

Mud made peach cobbler for the class.

Deadfalls shown will miss 90% of the time. weight is to high and small critters will jump clear most of the time . Deadfalls need to be just high enough for target animals to get under. Set down lower where they will catch game they need more weight to work. I built many deadfalls that look just as the survival book and websites show, when I actually tried to use them they failed. After trial and errors I came to the above conclusions. B.T.W. this outing looks to me like an excuse to hang out with pretty girls:D

Yeah, very poor quality stuff. Look at the arc where this would fall and what it would hit first.

Remember, none of these are stuck in the ground. The vertical piece always get kicked back.
Glad I can always count on the people on the forums to tell me how I'm doing it wrong.

Tell it to the squirrel she got in the picture above.

As I said it will miss 90% time it will miss, you found the slow squirrel :D . I'm not trying to bust your chops just trying to help . I was making deadfalls like you picture , after many misses I set deadfalls and set back and watched them with binoculars. With the weight set high more squirrels and rabbits will jump clear than you will catch. by lowering the weight I went from 10-20% catches on tripped sets to about 80% catches on tripped sets. But with the weight lowered I needed more weight to get quick kills . This is just my personal experience while catching a few dozen garden nuisanse animals, yours could be vary .

If people are willing to pay you to teach them that then well done you.

I'm sure her second figure four will be much better than this, though I doubt she will be as lucky next time.

I did not mean to offend you just share my experiance from using a deadfall. trigger work on the trap looks great . Also I see you are on the west cost , I have no experiance with critters over there As any one who has tried can tell you an eastern gray squirrel or red squirrel are hard to hit with a recurve bow if they see you . they are quick enough to jump an arrow most of the time

No, no way offended. It takes a lot to offend me, but the poor girl who made the trap might be in tears now (just kidding)!
Thanks for the great input that is what this forum is all about.

on PC now and all pics are correct... Blame Safari . Set up on the figure 4 looks nice, I think there is a ton of trial an error as the material change from location to location. I have very llimited success, in fact none really with a figure 4. My only traps that have worked in this situation are wire loops on a limb that I have identified a squirrel nest in. Even then it took 6 wire loops to have any success and 3 days to catch the critter. I found tadpoles and frogs much easier, but far less appetizing. I did use a home made bolo to slow down a yearling doe's rear legs. I wrapped her up enough that I could have stunned her with a log and gone in for the kill if I needed to. She struggled and got out easily, still enough time to do the deed if I needed to. I have shot a lot of deer both rifle and bow and it is difficult to get close enough and the movement scares them so you have to have the wind in your favor and the elimate of surprise. I will say 3 golf balls on para cord really flies works great and it takes half a day of practices to hit anything. I did this after seeing Pitdogs deer trap posted a few months ago. Just wanted to see if I could pull it off. Traps are much easier and far less work.

How large of a weight do you use to catch those big hogs, RWT?

:)

Haven't tried it yet on hogs. They are rather short legged. We do have a large teardrop trap with a spring door that has worked in the past. Requires baiting it for a few days to catch more than one.

Two of us saw 16 hogs Thursday night. Good day watching critters 4 roadrunners 3 hen turkeys and 1 owl during the evening.
