LOS ANGELES (AP) - A mountain lion attacked and severely injured a bicyclist in an Orange County park and may have killed a man whose body was found nearby, authorities said.

Authorities shot and killed a 2-year-old male cat hours later near the site where they discovered the body of Mark Jeffrey Reynolds, 35, of Foothill Ranch.

Authorities were "pretty confident" it was the animal that had committed the attack and took it to a laboratory for testing on Friday, said Steve Martarano, a spokesman for the California Fish and Game Department.

Anne Hjelle had been riding with a friend in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park shortly before dusk Thursday when the mountain lion attacked her, said Orange County Fire Capt. Stephen Miller.

The lion pounced on the 30-year-old's back, grabbed her by her head and began dragging her, said her friend, Debbie Nichols. Nichols said she screamed for help and grabbed Hjelle's legs in a struggle to free her.

"He dragged us down ... about 100 yards into the brush and I just kept screaming," Nichols said. "This guy would not let go. He had a hold of her face."

Other cyclists in the area threw rocks at the animal until it fled.

"I picked up a rock and threw it at the cat and the rock hit the cat right on the side of the head and the cat took off straight ahead and let go of the woman," Diego Lopez said.

Hjelle was airlifted to Mission Hospital, where she was in serious condition early Friday, a nursing supervisor said.

After the attack, Reynolds' body was found at the top of a trail near a bicycle. Authorities weren't sure how long he had been there and couldn't confirm if he was killed by the mountain lion, but Miller said, "it's pretty obvious that an animal was involved." An autopsy was planned Friday.

Authorities said a second mountain lion in the area was hit by a car and killed late Thursday and would also be tested.

Including Thursday's incident, there have been 13 mountain lion attacks on humans in California over the past 114 years, said Doug Updike, a biologist with California Fish and Game Department. In those cases, there were five fatalities, he said.

"The probability of somebody being attacked by a lion is extremely rare," Updike said. "There is a better chance of being struck by lightning than being attacked by a lion."

Thursday's attack was in a southern Orange County park adjacent to the communities of Foothill Ranch and Portola Hills and Cleveland National Forest.

Although the number of attacks is comparatively small, there have been previous sightings and attacks nearby.

Last September, game wardens shot and wounded an aggressive mountain lion spotted near an equestrian center in San Juan Capistrano. The lion was later found and killed, state officials said.

In 1986, 5-year-old Laura Small was attacked while looking for tadpoles with her mother in Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park in Orange County.

The girl's mother was able to rescue her daughter whose skull was partially crushed by the mountain lion's jaws. She was left blind in one eye and paralyzed on her right side.

Months later, a 6-year-old boy was mauled in the same park. County supervisors closed most of the park to children for nearly a decade. The ban was lifted in December 1997.

Three years later, a state law was passed prohibiting people from hunting or killing mountain lions.

The threat of mountain lions has become an increasing problem in Southern California as development encroaches upon rural areas that have been home to various animals.

Updike estimates there are between 4,000 and 6,000 adult lions roaming the Golden State, with usually five to seven mountain lions per 100 square miles.

and not a one of the people involved had anything other than rocks to fight back with... yet we read of stories of 60 year old men, alone in the woods, fighting off and killing brown and black bears with simple pocket knives...

i sat down next to the wood stove and talked tomy cats about this, their reply was that fast moving mountainbikers that travel unprepared in mountain lion country should be renamed as "meals on wheels".

I came to this site after hearing this story for a breath of fresh reality.

I to believe that to go into the wilderness it is a dangerous place NOT a play ground to ride your PC kid bikes in condition white.

a gun, a knife, walking stick or whatever, the people at Bladeforums have the combat mindset to deal with this problem, not whine! Plus I bet all those people there look down at people with knives I would even bet they ridiculed people who go into the wilds prepared.

The lion was 110 lbs a far cry from the 1-2 ton bears who have been dealt with.

believe me... I toned down my first post... I really don't have much sympathy for these wankers... pity, maybe, but not sympathy... I've ridden a bike for the better part of the last 30 years... so, first thing a cyclist packs is a tool kit, and most will include a small blade for cutting tires, tubes, patches, cables... and with the advent of the knife clip and one-handed opening... it is easy to stash a small folder on one's cycling tights... if not for instances like this, at least to cut the cheese when ya take a break for lunch!
And out here in Seattle, we've had couger captured in our urban parks, we've had 'em snatch our dogs and cats over on the east side of Lake Washington as we spread further into the forest... just what do these people think?

Okay... maybe they aren't "thinking"!

I guess "Go Coug's!" wouldn't be appropriate unless we were discussing collegiate sports?:(

I didn't know that (the weight of the mtn lion).

Just to show you how ignorant the condition-white folks who were at the scene are...

I watched the interview with one of the mountain bikers who responded to the calls for help. This guy was the one who threw the rock that hit the cat in the face. He was saying it was "huge cat...biggest he's ever seen (seen many, dude? kinda of a stupid comment), and then said something like it looked to be "800 lbs!".

Now, that's a big f'ing cat at 800 #'s, I thought to myself. Africa-class cat. Do mountain lions get that big I asked myself?

Now, I know: a) how little the avg folk know about wildlife (specifically mtn lions), and b) how lousy their physical estimations of said wildlife and their surroundings.

Guncollector, have you ever seen people with big dogs that say their dog weighs 100lbs, when in actuallity it weighs about 75-80lbs? I crack up with the over estimation in size in a situation where the adrenaline isn't pumping imagine when it is!!!! Has anyone seen the pic of the mountain lion killed in West Texas?

But, hey 800#'s is equivalent to 3 NFL-size Tight Ends, and then some.

No matter how much your adrenaline is pumping, only ignorance can mistake the mass of 110# for 800#'s.

Yep, ignorance is bliss unless you're tryin to boost your image on TV. Then you just look like a dumb ass to those in the know and the rest think you're the bravest of the brave.:barf:

More like an Asian-class cat. Specifically Siberian. The biggest African lions are about 400-500 lbs. Non-siberian Tigers a bit heavier than that. If that cougar HAD been 800 lbs, it would have been about twelve feet long and five feet high at the shoulder. At that size, it could have eaten the woman, her friend, and both of their bikes without dragging them anywhere. Maybe it did look that big to our hero/witness, though.

When looking at these cats I think people get over excited is when they see the bone structure,Mt Lions have some thick ass leg bones compared to,lets say a german shepard, then they put the length and height and it becomes 800 pounds LOL.

People look at my pitbull and say MAN does he weigh 100 pounds or what,he weeighs 65 pounds LOL.

a large tom cougar reported to weigh in at 160 lbs, was shot near harrisburg pa. by a coyote hunter using a call.

Mountain lions live from Northern BC ( they are slowly expanding North ) down to Patagonia South America . The largest ones are found in Patagonia so I have read where they can get to be over 10 feet long including the tail. The weight of an adult male can vary considerably from around 100 - 240 lbs .

I have seen one in the wild stalking a fawn in a canyon during the winter with all the rocks along the river covered in ice and 18" of snow on the ground. My dog interupted the stalk by catching the cougar's scent and running towards it! Needless to say the cougar then proceeded to go after the dog but due to the ice covered steep canyon they both had to walk carefully otherwise they would have fallen into the river. It was interesting to watch this and compare the size of the cougar to my 57 lb Airedale Terrier. The length of the cat was twice that of the dog and the cat was taller at the shoulder by about 6 inches. I am quite sure the cat was a male just by size.... anyway I gave a yell at which the cougar glanced at me and leapt uphill in very steep terrain , it was gone in 3 smooth jumps... impressive.

Speaking for all the hungry, bold predators, I sure am glad all you tasty vegetarians go unarmed into the countryside.

Otherwise, you might hurt kitty!

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Reuters) - An Argentine man leaped into the lion's pen during a weekend visit to the Buenos Aires zoo, challenged one of the animals to a bullfight -- and walked away with just minor cuts and bruises.

"He jumped into the lion's pen, and when the lions didn't react, he took off his jacket and egged them on," said zoo veterinarian Miguel Rivolta. "It was an act of madness."

Television footage showed Quique the lion sitting on top of 22-year-old Lucas Tomas, padding him with his paw and leaving only superficial injuries to his head, arm and chest, doctors said.

Quique was sedated with a tranquilizer dart. The would-be matador was being examined by a psychiatrist.

here is a link to the Reuters story itself (including a picture).

Alco141, do you have a source for that info ? Mountain lions are not on the game list so it's not legal to shoot them . Of course they say they don't exist in PA ..... Max weight for a mountain lion is about 200 lbs..... The man in argentina said god made him do it !!!

Long ago and far away...somewhere...I read that a viable defense is a portable boat air-horn. On the other hand, if it didn't work, the test subjects couldn't report back on the study, I'd guess.

Just a thought.:)
