Got a question for the Blade Forums Illuminati. Cutting out blades yesterday afternoon and had something happen for the first time in my 44 year expensive hobby. Yes, it's a metal cutting bandsaw, new Starrett blade. Cutting along, as usual, and the CPM154 material stops my blade at the point shown in the picture. Stops it cold. Pull back a hair and start my cut again and it rounds off the teeth on almost the whole blade before I figure it out. Blade won't cut a thing now. Replace the blade and come at that spot from another angle and cut around the hard spot. On to the grinder and shaped it up to the intended profile.

Wondering what on earth I ran up on. This was a stick of Crucible, 1/8', and did not find that issue on any other blades I cut out from that stick.

Some steel has hard spots in it sometimes. I've ran into that before, maybe on S90V or CPM 20CV or something? It was a few years ago.

It totally sucks when it happens! I want to say it was S90V that did it to me on some Shechita blanks?

I bought some 1095 off Ebay. It must have been laser cut, because the edges were too hard for a bimetal bandsaw blade.

You probably broke off a tooth and it’s imbedded in the steel.

Cut from the other direction and see if it cuts.

Otherwise you have a hard spot in the steel.

I had a similar thing happen to me with AEB-L before. Usually I can just start at a different spot. It is usually just a hard spot in the steel.

I have had that happen with 8670 before. Asked Pops about it and they said you really had to bear down on it to get it started on the edges. After "bearing down" on the edge to begin the cut, it cut like any other steel. Laser cut? No idea.

Just a suggestion, I don't use a bandsaw to cut out blades. I use worn out blaze 36 grit belts. These belts are not good for anything else but really make quick work out of profiling the blade. I got this idea from Bob Loveless.

My picture shows how close I get to the scribed line. Then I go to the belts. I’d be spending all day at my grinder otherwise. Oh well….different ways to skin a cat, etc
