I just picked up a Schrade Cigar Box Classic Stockman (3 9/16" premium stockman pattern) from Galyans.

Some history about me: I have carried slipjoints for 22 of my 28 years but have only really nickpicked their fit for the last 5 years or so, never paid attention before. I have owned Case, Queen, Buck, Eye Brand, Old Timer, Uncle Henry, Mooremaker (the higher line models). I don't give a toot how shiny a knife is b/c it is going in my pocket with keys, but lateral play, unfinished tangs and shoulders and weak springs kill me. It seems like every knife I handle has a loose blade, or weak springs, or gaps in the liners.

This Schrade Cigar Stockman has the best fit of any slipjoint I have ever owned, bar none. There is absolutely no lateral play in any blade, the springs have good snap, the tangs and shoulders are finished and they open and close smooth. There is only one small 1/4" gap between the springs and liners. Galyans only had one in the store and I couldn't handle more than one so maybe I just got lucky.

I wish more traditionals could be had with this quality. Not to mention the low price ($40) compared to what I have paid for Mooremaker and Queen.

This one is a winner from Schrade.

Those particular models are very clean, well finished knives.

Schrade makes a good quality knife for low bucks, I think that's why they get overlooked alot, because they're very affordable.

I love their stockman pattern, especially the older Waldens, and have yet to get one, new or old, that wasn't tight and cleanly finished.

I sure hope you were just guessing when you said that was a 1/4" gap between the springs and the liner! Yikes! :)

The gap is about that long, but it isn't that thick. it's like the width of a hair thick. ;)

Now, if they'd just offer these knives in their fine carbon steel ala the Old Timers, instead of the stainless Schrade+. If they did that, I'd buy one.

I've seen pics of these, they sure are nice!

Schrade makes great bone-handled knives, like Mnblade said, too bad they don't make more nice ones.
