Wondering about a Cold Steel Peace Keeper

Hello. Lately I've been thinking about purchasing a Cold Steel Peace Keeper, and I was wondering if it's worth it.

I've heard that the 420 sub zero quenched steel isn't very good. Is this true? is it REALLY that bad? If so, does anyone know of an online store (that ships to Canada) that has the carbon V model available?

Any comments or info on this knife is appreciated, thanks.

Uh? The Peace Keeper isn't a push dagger. Perhaps you're thinking of the Safekeeper?

They sell the Peace Keeper on knifezone.ca, so I doubt it would be illegal.

Cold Steel's Special Projects had some Peacekeeper carbon V seconds for sale. You might want to check if they still have them. Cold Steel still hasn't said what the 420 steel they use is. The 420 HC Buck Knives I have work ok, but the 420 J2 knives I got rid of were dull and could not hold an edge when sharpened. Jerry Van Cook wrote good reviews of Cold Steel's 420 knives, and they do cut well on the "Proof" DVD. I don't doubt the toughness or cutting ability, only the edge holding ability of those knives. If you need to use a defensive knife enough that edge holding becomes a problem you live in the wrong neighborhood. :D ;) I'd go with the carbon V if it is available, and would not worry that much if I could only get the 420. Another option is the Boker Applegate-Fairbairn in 440C. I got one a few weeks ago and it is a great knife.

oops, my mistake. the 420 is considered the basic entry level steel, but it's all in the heat treat, Buck knives use 420 but are constantly praised for their edge-holding ability. it doesnt compare to the new supersteels such as S30V but its much more inexpensive too. aside from that, 420 provides excelent corrosion resistance, so if the knife is to be left outdoors or in extreme environments then get 420. if the knife is taken care of, then carbon V will definately be the better choice, Cold Steel no longer makes the peacekeeper in Carbon V and was criticized when they made the switch over to 420 for many of their products, but they still provide many of the good mid range folders such as the Vaquero Grande and the Voyager series. Unless you really want this particular knife, in the price range of the peacekeeper, you may want to consider the SOG SEAL 2000, the SOG SEAL PUP, or the Camillus BK 10.

The so-called thing about push-daggers being illegal is loosely enforced. I still see them in stores, with LEO's in the stores not even noticing them. It seems as long as they don't have a double-edge blade they are legal.
