i picked up a as new in box Case Camper-6 dot-1984 model and i see on the stamps for this year one stamp says stainless and one does not--mine is not marked stainless does that mean it is CV--i can see a little tarnish on it and am hoping it is--:D

The 640045R was made in carbon steel until 1990 when it was switched to stainless.

Any Case stainless steel knife will have SS either at the end of the pattern number of in the tang stamping or both.

The 640045R was actually made by Camillus so the steel could be 1095 unless Camillus used Case's CV steel since they were making them to Case's specifications.

thanks for the info--thats what i wanted to hear--love carbon steel much better--like the aged look after being used for awhile--:D

Would love to see pics as you get to know your "new" knife. I have been looking at the Case version of the scout pattern for a long time but don't have one yet. My SBJ keeps hogging up my attention. Love that knife...

On the older Case knives----what does "HP" mean?

On a stockman it meant it had a sheepfoot and spey blade. (They used the second letter of each word so as not to confuse the issue with "SS" for stainless steel.)

I can't recall if they used it for "high polish" on some of the stainless blades. Someone smarter will answer that one.

Thanks. That one puzzled me for a while. The second letter, now I get it.

No, HP was never used for High Polish.

They did use SSP for "Stainless Steel With a Polished Edge". The original SSP knives were the first satin finished or glazed finish Case stainless knives introduced in 1965.

I cover most of the Case pattern number abbreviations in one section of my book, with another section on the history of Case's use of stainlesss steel.

I have one of the "SSP" stamped knives in my pocket as we speak. A stainless lockback from the 70's with wood scales.

Yes, thos 051 LSSP patterns (M1051, 21051, and 61051) were introduced in 1976.

That 61051 is scarce since that one was discontinued in 1980 nad two other variations were introduced.

Don't tell anyone, but the 051 pattern lockbacks were actually made by Alcas for Case.

Interesting info, Steve. Any idea what stainless they may have used? I'll tell you this, it takes a wicked (and very fine) edge.

I have never seen any real documentation on the type of SS used by Case back then. It might have been 440C or it might have been 440A. I do not think that it was 420.

I think Ford (fewpop) once wrote here on the forum that the knife featured a 440C blade. What it was based upon I don't know but I believe he has had his for some years.

Elliot;

I would bet on 440C as well.

Queen used 440C on their entire pocket knife line back then. I have that documented in a factory letter from Queen dated 1976. And Queen's knives retailed at very low price points back then, less than Case, so it was certainly possible to produce a quality pocket knife in 440C at a normal retail price back then.
