I was thinking about getting the Edge Pro Apex with all the stones and tapes. Does it work well? Do they really offer a free example of how it works? If you have pictures of the edge it makes, please post. I was considering free hand stones but after hearing about this system I feel like this would be better than buying two Waterstones for $200.

I was looking at the cktg shapton glass set version myself vs their chosera set both with the edgepro apex for an easy portable sharpening system.

Did this with the EP Apex.... Course, Med, Fine & Extra Fine stones (just the regular stones it comes with) and finished with some 3000 grit tape. Took maybe 20 minutes

That's an amazing looking edge. Does it have any sort of "sticky" bite to it or is it smooth? Also, they have a Shapton and Chosera set for the the Edge Pro?! I had not idea! Where can I find more info on that??

It's smooth as silk, you may be able to get more info on the Edge Pro site. I never felt the need to go with different stones.... The original ones leave a pretty nice edge with a little practice.

chef knives to go has the shapton and chosera sets bundled as a kit, attractive options in my mind :)

I bought the pro model, with the scissor attachment, etc. I am terrible at free hand sharpening. I just make things worse. With the EP, I had knives that popped hairs within 30 minutes of unboxing the EP. In fact, my wife is mad because every time I sharpen a knife I check it against the hairs on my left arm, which is almost bald. She says it looks like I got mange or something on that arm lol

I have the 5 stones and three polish tapes, and it gets plenty sharp with that. I usually just go to 1000 grit. That gets it shaving sharp. My cousins grandpa died and left him an old Case fixed blade that was dull as hell, I reprofiled it and that is the only knife that I took to 6000 grit with the polish tape and when my arm hairs see it they just fall off in fear... Thats the only knife I went that far on because he isn't going to use it, its more of a keepsake now since it was his grandfathers.

I'm actually probably going to get the Chosera set first. I like the fact they made some of them in 1/2" width because I have a few recurved blades. I can probably go from the 10k Chosera straight to a 6k polishing tape right?

TBH, I'm not sure. I barely got the set a couple weeks ago. I would email the maker, he responds really fast and really knows his stuff.

Thanks. This is a little off topic, but have you noticed Case's old steel was MUCH better than their modern stainless? I refuse to buy anymore Case knives made of that junk. They still make some of their yellow handled knives in carbon steel though.

I have a few case knives that I bought recently from a hardware store. They seemed to be ok, but I haven't used them too much to know how well they retain their edge. Ever since joining this site, I pretty much only buy benchmade. I also buy a few Buck 110's a year as gifts. And I rotate knives constantly so it is hard to tell how long they hold an edge because I can't remember the last time I sharpened them lol

Lmao. I can say though, the edge holding isn't as good as Buck's on the new Case's. I think they use the same steel, except they can't heat treat it as well as Buck can.

I think I'll stick with the Chosera. They go up to 10k instead of 8k like the regular Shapton set. I can probably jump straight from the 10k to the 6k polishing tape.
