Hey fellas. I have been eyeballing the Mercators for awhile now and been itching to pick one up and since I will have to purchase it online I was wondering what all I should look for? Seems there are a couple different configurations. Should I pick up an old or new one? I for sure want the carbon version is there anything else I should look for in peticular? Thanks in advance guys! By the way if you fine gentleman wanna go ahead and post some pics of yours that would just shove me over the edge for sure lol

I'd go for a new carbon one. The black with a cat on it (there are sterile versions). The brass one looks cool but is about twice the price, at least at my source.

It's a nice strong knife. It's a little hard on the pockets and not too easy on the hand in extended use.

If you want THE mercator, get the mercator with black cat k55k and carbon steel blade. I also have the brass version, and love it. Brass one has coating on the handle but it stains regardless and after sweaty times it just chips off.. hence allowing nice patina! I love the knives, but the bit size indeed requires some trickery for comfirtable pocket time.

I like the K55 Carbon Black Cat Mercator.
Gets very sharp easily and fits perfectly in a Mini Mag 2AA flashlight holster/sheath

What's your experience regarding pricing A.L.?

For the regular merc, price is very fair. You won't get super smooth knife with hitech materials but that is the appeal imo. The brass version - or atleast mine - seemed to walk more smoothly and is certainly flashier. I think the brass makes it one fine knife to look at and use.

I personally love the design. Slim, narrow and thin blade cuts like tood knife is supposed to.

What was the price difference?

Just looking at mine again. It's quite an elegant knife, slim and light. I don't know what they cost; mine was a couple of bucks at an estate sale.

Has anyone noticed that the F&F on the K55K's has really improved?
I just got a second K55K with a SS blade and this folder is perfect.

I never bought one because I always thought the handles were plastic! Now I'm gonna get one!

This is a neat knife. I have the black one as well as the brass version. I now read somewhere that the knife can also be had with red or green anodized handles.

My brass Otter came from Sweden for about twice the price of the Black Cat. This seems to be pretty common for brass versions of many knives; the higonokami comes immediately to mind.

I find it easy to pocket-carry because of the flat handle. BTW, if you think this handle gets uncomfortable, it is still miles better than a Douk-Douk, which has almost an identical profile.

Seems to be my experience exactly, so I assume waiting for it to show up stateside is probably futile. Just pay the premium and the shipping and be done with it, they said. Your knife budget will hold up, they said. They keep feeding into my addiction, I said!  :D

Try Baryonyx.

These great knives graced the pages of Popular Mechanics and other "men's" magazines for decades. These take me back to my boyhood days.
