wondering about throwing hatchets

So me and a few buddies went to some medieval festival thing a few days ago (ya it was kind of weird, but it was fun, plus they had some blades! haha) and I got to throw a few throwing hatchets and it was a lot of fun. I'm not thing I want to spend a ton of money on this, but I though it would be fun to try some more. So do I need to buy an ax made for throwing, or could I just use one I already have. If I need to buy one what would you suggest.

pick up some cheap tomahawks from Cold Steel or Crazy Crow. Ragweed forge has some nice ones, too - but they cost a bit more.

Do you like the axe you already own? "Cause you will mess it up. Ding it, chip it, break handles. Or bend metal handles. and don't put stuff you like behind the target. If you find some flea market bargain axes, hatchet, or tomahawks that would be a less expensive way to start. Usally what goes wrong isn't the hatchets fault.

So I would not start out with a family heirloom or family treasure you want to keep nice.

They are tools that take a beating, but learning to throw is a beating X 10.

If you want to throw a hand axe instead of a tomahawk, take a look at the Condor double bit. The price is higher than a Cold Steel tomahawk but still less than $40. For a throwing tomahawk the Cold Steel are hard to beat especially for the price. A friend bought a CS Trail Hawk and stuck it the first 10 times he threw it. Throw from the distance required for tournaments, 13 feet, and you will generally get one rotation and stick it if you are fairly accurate.
