We all know that there is no one best steel and the best steel depends on the needs of the user and the type of knife. For me, the most important attributes of a steel are edge keeness, edge holding ability and ease of sharpening. I've read that VG-10 possess all three. Having a William Henry Evolution folder made of VG-10 I can I can attest to the keeness factor. I just pulled out my Sebenza that has a hair poppin edge and compared it the the edge of the WH folder. I just can't believed the difference. I don't know if the sharpness is attributed to William Henry or to the VG-10 or both. As I recall, many Spyderco Calypso Jr. owners also brag about the sharpness of the VG-10. Add in the fact that that VG-10 is stainless, and I assume at least moderately tough based on Fallkniven's use in fixed blade. Do we have a wonder steel that might be considered the best all around steel or do we have a lot of hype.

I also have a William Henry in VG10. I like it very well. The blade is so thin it cuts like magic. It is reletively new, so I can't comment on edge holding as much.

Maybe that's the difference here. The Sebenza may have a thicker blade than the Willima Henry, making all the difference. Or the bevel angle may be different. I have a BG-42 Buck 110, with Blade 2000, and it takes a better edge than my large Sebenza. The Buck does have a much thinner bevel and grind though, and may not quite handle the abuse that I give the Sebenza.

I don't have any VG-10 to compare it to though. :(

I don't know if VG-10 is a wonder steel or not, but I sure like it better than any stainless steel I've ever tried. It takes an edge better than any of my other stainless blades.

What we need is a comparison between two identical blades made from different steels. It seems the only sure way to get an accurrate comparison.

You make a very good point, Paul. I will admit that my opinion of VG-10 is based almost exclusively on the Calypso Jr. And the Calypso's excellent edge geometry could make any decent cutlery steel look good.

We may be in luck regarding performance testing two identical blades in different steels, because if I am not mistaken, A. G. Russell is producing his excellent Deerhunter in both VG-10 and D2. I don't know when they will be available...they may be now for all I know.

The deerhunter would be an excellent knife to test different steels comparitively. It might be called the "Calypso Jr." of fixed blades with it's slicing abilities.

Or A. G. might say the Calypso is the "Deerhunter" of folders.:)
