My Buck 110 (Idaho factory vintage from last year) returned home today, complete with a spiffy, new BG-42 blade!

Woo-hoo! :D

It took less than two weeks from the time I shipped it, too!

As usual, the primary blade grind is well executed. It could stand to be a bit smoother on open and closing, but I still have not cleaned and lubed it yet (it had some buffing compound still on the blade that I wiped off).

They shined the bolsters, so now they're all ... shiny.

The edge as is cuts the paper used to pack it easily. It shaves hair, but does not "pop" it (yet). The edge is a little too polished for my liking too, as it does not slice very well (yet). All easily remedied.

I am quite pleased and it was definitely $35 well spent.

Thanks, Joe! Thanks, Sarah! Thanks everyone else at Buck who worked on it!

So does it have the Idaho symbol on the blade like the rest from 2005? Did they put that on the BG-42 blade?

Nope, the original 420HC blade had the Idaho stamp.

This blade has on the nail nick side, at the tang:

"Buck" (in old English type)
CUSTOM
U.S.A.

and near the nail nick:

BG-42

and on the reverse:

DESIGNER'S CHOICE

The blades used in the Buck custom shop (even the 420HC ones) do not have the regular year coding on them, but are marked the way rhinos is. The premium steels also have the steel stamped along the spine.

I spent a few minutes this afternoon doing a tiny bit of reprofiling of the primary edge bevel with some diamond rods. It was easier than I expected, albeit not as easy as with the 420HC.

After a bit of fine tuning, it now pops arm hair. No test cutting so far, but I expect it to be a winner.

However, I was reminded that I took the "one arm bandit" (from it when I decided to send it for the blade replacement) and put it on the .112. I've been using around the house. I don't know whether to get some more bandits, or move it back and retire the .112. for a while.

BG-42ized Buck 110 Update!

Okay ... a few days ago I moved the "bandit" from the old .112. I'd been using around the house to the BG-42.

Unfortunately I don't much about the edge holding yet. So far I've succumbed to my obssessive-compulsive sharpening trait ... each time I use it, I am compelled to touch-up the edge! I can't help myself, so I may never know how well the BG-42 maintains an edge unless I have to destroy a truckload of cardboard boxes some day, or skin a one-ton polar bear by myself.:D

This while taking the trash and recycling to the curb, my path was impeded by the dead branches and an enormous (but dying) sunflower planted at the edge of the driveway. Some of the banches/stems were close to half an inch in diameter, but the BG-42ized 110 whacked them as if they weren't there. Granted, much of that is technique and hand speed, but it did cut very well. I love that noise it makes when you cut through something like that with one stroke!

So far I have resisted the urge to sharpen. I may be able to open today's mail before I once again yield to the temptation, so I'll let you know how easier it zips through some envelopes!

Hey so can i just send in a knife to buck and ask for a different blade? How do i find out the price?

Also can they engrave a knife I already bought for me?

The price for the BG-42 blade replacement on a Buck 110 is $35, which includes return postage. I don't know about the engraving!

Here is how you get the new blade installed. Send your knife with a check for $35 to:

DO NOT say Buck Knives.... Say BK INC ......... Buck Knives ...invites theft.

Okay, I couldn't resist the compulsion to sharpen after the Sunflower Incident. But, I don't think I've done anything to it since then, so I've gone almost a week without sharpening it.

The "hair popping" edge went away fairly soon, and didn't last much longer than the same for the 420HC. On the other hand, it still quite sharp and entirely adequate for opening boxes and stuff. It still zips through envelopes and paper tape on boxes, whereas the 420HC would start dragging after just a few uses, especially when I tried to slice flimsy plastic wrap without much tension on it.

So ... it seems like the first 0.5% of sharpness is lost pretty much right away, which I suspect is true of just about any steel. So far it's obviously doing a better job than the 420HC, as I doubt if it's lost much past that.

With the bandit installed, methinks I have a new favorite for work around the house!

I was a skeptic at one time, but now I'm a believer.
BG-42 is fantastic!

I killed a Kleenex box yesterday. I posted the story in the Buck 110 stories topic.

I think it's been over two weeks since I sharpened the BG-42ized Buck 110. In that time, I've opened a lot of packages, both cardboard and plastic. I've even done some more combat with that sunflower from before.

I feel like I'm almost over the hump to compulsively sharpen!

i got over that when i had to explain to the va doctor all the cuts still healing on my arm... after he had said i need to see the soc workers up stairs...
then had to explain to them and as a word of advice ... dont whip out one to demstrate takeing hair off your arm in a head docs office... they have bottons you don't see .....
