I got a new Ryobi 8" bench grinder for Christmas, so far, I'm not happy. I had the first one all set up, used it to sharpen a few axes, then noticed a funny burning electrical wire smell coming from the grinder, and it was heating up in under five minutes to the point where it would burn you if you touched it. So, I returned it today, got the new one out of the box, the light above the left wheel is completely smashed off, so guess what, tomorrow morning, it's going back to Home Depot again but I can't decide whether to get another and try again or to just get the money back for it and try my luck somewhere else. Does anyone know of a good benchgrinder either 6" or 8" for around $70 or is the Ryobi a better choice than others for the same price?

I've been using a Craftsman 6" Variable Speed for a few years now. It hasn't let me down yet.

It retails for $99 but they're always on sale. If not you can apply for the Sears credit/visa card and get 10% to 20% off at the time of purchase.

Their 6" single speed retails for $65.

I have a 6 inch Craftsman at the house, 1/3 HP and probably around twenty years old. Solid as a rock. We have a two year old Ryobi 6 inch grinder at the shop where I work, It blows compared to the Craftsman grinder. You can get it to stall if you lean into your work, and it's just plain noisy. I'm not sure about the present day Craftsman grinders, but I would not get a Ryobi:(

Remember the old saw, you get what you pay for. I'd go Craftsman or Delta even if a few more bucks.
