I posted This thread a few days ago, searching for recommendations for a great everyday carry folder to replace my Smith & Wesson SWCH400DL that failed on me.

This was my first "expensive" knife purchase. I had previously been buying "cheap" knives (sub $50) with the justification that I'd lose or break an expensive knife and then be saddened by my lost money. I realized that I was making the same justification for cheap knives as I had been making for cheap sunglasses; I would end up spending more money in the long run and potentially be caught out in the cold without a knife when I needed it the most if a cheap one failed on me in a critical situation.

After my S&W broke, in the two days that I was without it, I found myself reaching for it a dozen times a day and wishing that I still had it. I quickly realized just how much of a useful tool it really was and how inconvenienced I was without it.

So, I went to a local cutlery store and handled all the folders that I thought that were in my pricerange. I specified sub-$100, but I quickly found them to feel inferior in my hands. I didn't like the way the grip felt, I didn't like the action and I wasn't bonding with the knife at all.

Then, I found the glorious Benchmade 635 mini-skirmish Blackwood. This knife felt absolutely perfect in my hands and the action was liquid smooth in every way. I instantly liked everything about this knife.

I spent a little more than I originally intended to (This one ran me $180+tax), however, I do not regret my purchase in the slightest. From the first time I held it I was able to open it with zero effort and it felt like I'd already owned it. Without hesitation I laid down the money for it and I'm very glad I did.

The only thing that bugs me is the questionable legality of the blade length. It's just under 3.5" and in the city of Los Angeles, required blade length is under 3". I am not terribly worried about it, as I will be using this knife every day for work and can probably get by since the officer may consider it to fall under a tradesman classification if I explain to him why I carry it.

All in all, I love it. It feels fantastic. My knife is #201/1000 from this run. :D

I'm glad you are happy with your purchase.

I want to point out, though, that $180 is a lot for a Mini-Skirmish. I got my full-size Skirmish for $150.

Don't buy knives in stores unless you know they have good prices, or don't mind paying a lot extra. A local knife store sells Skirmishes for $280! I saved over 100 bucks by shopping online.

The good thing about going to a real store is that you get to try the knife out. You connected with your 635, and you needed to hold it to know you would fall in love. But you may want to try it out in the store, and then buy it online in the future.

I am not trying to make you feel bad about your purchase. I bought an Mcusta Kasumi for 200 bucks in a store when I knew I could get it online for 140 because I didn't want to wait for shipping and would feel bad about trying out about 50 knives in the store and then buying online. I just wanted to let you know how much cheaper knives are online so you can explore that option.

Yeah, I realized that I probably could have found it for a lot less, but $200 is the price I've seen from half a dozen online vendors as well and my local dealer knocked $20 off his sticker price.

Although I probably could have saved $20 or more by waiting, I really didn't want to because I was without an everyday carry and found myself wanting one immediately.

...but yeah, I instantly bonded with this knife. It feels perfect in my hands and I can open it without even thinking. I'm more than pleased with my purchase.

EDIT:

I should add that I just noticed on the blade it says:

First Production
201/1000

Interesting.

It's my understanding, being a LA dweller, that 3" is the max for concealed fixed blades. No switchblades or gravity knives 2" and over period. All other knives are not specified, and most of the folders discussed in this forum fall under the non-switchblade exemption. So it's legal, but the cops don't know it, so don't do anything illegal that would get you busted because it would be expensive to win the case in court.

Congrats on the nice knife. I'd consider it myself if it weren't right hand clip only.

From what I've read, concealed fixed blades in California are %100 illegal, and folders are legal for concealed carry under three inches, for open carry over three inches, but must have a bias towards closing and cannot be carried in the open position. I could be wrong though, so don't quote me. :p

Maybe in L.A. there is a limit for concealed folders, but in greater California you can carry any folder concealed no matter how big it is.

The only size regulation at all in California knife laws is for switchblades (they must be under 2 inches). Fixed blades can be any size (open carry) and folders can be any size (concealed or open carry).

Yeah, the laws within the city of Los Angeles are a little stricter, but, I'm complicit with state law and I'm not using it for anything nefarious. :p I'm not too worried.

You got a great knife! Now that you know, shop around in the dealers that support this site... great prices there!

The Mini Skirmish truly is one of my favorites, $180 for a Mini is a bit much though. I got my Limited Edition 1 of 250 pieces made for $165. You will love it none the less. PGH~
