I'm making a wooden sword with a cord-wrapped handle. I don't have access to any exotic woods, but I need to choose a type of wood and a nylon cord color that would look good together. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Howie

i can tell you a few places to buy them, but how big of peices do you need? how many?
my personal favorits are cocobolo, ironwood, macassar and gabon ebony, purple heart, and rosewood. there is a very wide range of woods to choose from though.

No time for exotic woods to be shipped. I need something I can get from Home Depot, Lowe's, etc., such as oack, pine, fir, etc. Cord is easier to get, I think. I already have some that is black with blue spots, and I'm considering using that, but I'm very open to suggestions.

Thanks again
Howie

Howie, I'm not exactly sure what you are making and what it will be used for, but here is what I suggest.
If you are making a bokken, commonly used in many forms of Japanese martial arts for sword training, or iaido, I would (and have) use oak (pref. red oak) or possibly hickory. This is a very strong wood and will stand up to getting roughed around during training, and it should be fairly easy to come by for you. You can also easily dye the wood with a water or oil based wood dye available at any hardware store to help with matching it up with a specific cord you want to use.
I'm not sure if you are after something that looks good or that performs, but in any case there is suggestion.
Good luck.

Jim,
I bought all of my Escrima Kali sticks from I&I Sports (Inosanto and Imada). They sell a variety of very high quality Rattan sticks in various finishes and lengths and are great people to deal with. Their stick are used by professionals and are considered some of the best in the states. I bought my sticks four years ago so don't know if they are still in business but here is their address.

Check them out, if still around, I highly recommend them.

No, not exactly a boken. I don't want to train with it really. I just need something that would look presentable. I suppose most people think almost anything looks good with gold, so I'll consider using that, amongst other colors, such as green if I can find it.

I'm TIRED!
