Well, I am in the market for a good wood carving set. I would like to keep the price around 150. I just need a good basic set to get me started, but will allow me to do some intricate carving. Thanks guys.

my carving kit consists of a mora #1, mora spoon knife and soon a crook knife.

i've got chisels and gouges as well but dont use them as much as the above.

what kinda carving are you looking to do anyways?

I will mostly being doing bowls and spoons. Just the bare minimums,
so I guess chisels aren't necessary. Light enough to take into the bush
as well, I don't want to lug around much. I think I might just order everything
separately, I think Ragweed's Forge had some of the mora wood carving tools,
I was not sure about them at first, but anything made by mora will be good, right?

Thanks for the reply.

i definetly suggest the mora 1 and the spoon knife 164.

once i get that swedish forged crook knife i'll post a review on it and you can judge if you need it for yourself.

if its spoons and bowls your after all you need is a spoon knife and mora.

:D

how about the Flexcut Carvin' Jack -- 6 small tools, they sell it in left or right handed versions, runs around $130.

another option would be a Warren carving kit - this is the "deluxe" kit, runs about $80

either can be found in woodworking shops if you want to handle before buying or just google the name for a variety of vendors.

Thanks so much.

i've also got a gransfors swedish carving axe on the way.

stick around with me long enough and your wallet just might start crying a bit :p

1066vik, those flexcut knives look great but kinda pricey at 130 ?

$130 is too much for a compact set of 6 carving tools but not too much for an axe?
not saying you're wrong, but the irony makes me smile.
just keep in mind - good tools are rarely inexpensive.

Heya PDE! For what you're going to be doing. A spoon knife, crooked knife (indian style), carving knife or mora, and a draw knife should do the trick.
