Wood cutting bandsaw?

I am considering the purchase of a 14" wood cutting bandsaw for handle material. As usual, money is tight so I am looking for the " best bang for a buck". I have checked the local Lowes and the Delta 14" looked pretty shoddy for the price. I am open to all input.
Thanks.

Craig's list in your area and check Ebay and set up the search function on the left so it narrows it down to your local area. Every one farther away has to figure in the shipping and you won't. I got a 14" Sears from an older gentleman at a yard sale. He had a bunch of tools and I was covered in all those. We talked a while and he said I have something for you and took me out to his shop and sold me a pristine craftsman 14" saw for $125 dollars. I have had it a couple years, but, it is bigger than I need for knife stuff and am going to trade it to my brother for his smaller one. He does musical instruments.

I've had a Delta/Rockwell 14" bandsaw since 1986. I highly recommend them. Its one machine I could not function without. Get the mobile base for it, the rip fence and the work light. It will last a long time. You might also get one with more than the 1/2 HP motor. 3/4 HP would be better IMO. 1HP even better.

I agree with STR. The Delta is superior in the 14" class of saws. The model that Lowe's carries is not their flagship model. You can find it in various woodworking catalogs and stores. I own a Jet and am happy with it. If I had it to do all over again I would have gotten the Delta. However, I have heard good feed back on the Grizzly. Which I'm sure you can get for a reasonable price.

I also would love to have one of the older Delta saws. If I could find one, I would jump on it. The new one had aluminum wheels.

I'd get a Jet or Powermatic e-bay or Craigslist.org if I was looking.

HTH,
Balin
