I know most wooden handles will fade with age. Is there a way to keep this from happening? I have an improved trapper in bocote and I really Like the grain of the wood the way it is now. Is there a way to keep it that way? ... Thanks Bob

In part of my work I do wood finishing of cabinets, furniture, hardwood doors, etc. As part of my sometimes paying hobby, I do finishing of exotic woods. Most dense, oily hardwoods from South America will not turn lighter with age, but just the opposite.

This will sound trite, but if you want the wood on the knife to stay dark, just use it. The hand oils from normal use (if it gets a good amount) will turn the scales darker, not lighter.

What Robert says, work gives oils & moisture.

Also, just avoid leaving any knife in bright sunshine in a window for any length of time. This wreaks havoc with wood colour, or other handles- just look at any piece of furniture left near a west or south facing window....A bit of beeswax polish or the like can't hurt either!

Thanks, Will

I'll echo the use statement, which will darken wood. I find a dab of lemon oil on a soft rag and then buff the covers a bit with it works wonders for making the covers pop.
