I figured you are the guys to ask about this. My dad has an old .22 rifle and I would like to make a stock for it. I have a lot of pine but would like to make it out of something more solid. I dont know if it matters but I will try to make it mostly by hand. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

black walnut. durable and looks great. plus its common as a gun stock. blanks are obtainable also.

maple is another good wood.
what you want is something "stable" which means it doesn't expand and contract much with changes in humidity.

+1 for walnut. Depending on what you want to spend in blanks, you can pick up some beautifully figured walnut. Cool, old rifles deserve to be stocked in figured walnut.

Some of these stock blanks are REALLY expensive. I guess i will trace out one of his other guns on a block of wood and then attempt to rough it out and then sand it down. Thanks for all the replies.

Need some BKT in this post or its outta here.

We need to see "how to" pictures of you carving the stock with your Becker blades.
That would be cool as heck for sure.

Wish I had a working camera, I am not even sure if this will work. But I do have a bit of experience with carving. I wont be able to start this until I get the wood to make it out of so in about 2 weeks is when I probably be able to start. If it works I will keep all of you updated.

I will be seriously impressed if you manage to carve a functional gun stock with Becker knives. That would be sweet. Definitely pics.

Whatever you choose to make it out of you should make some handle scales to go with it. Then you will have a matching set.
