Anyone ever try using wood dowel for handle pins? Maybe using a dark wood dowel, walnut, on a light wood handle, maple? Thanks.

Yes I'm working on one at the moment and made a few before
(The one in my avatar has self made blackwood pins)
Just remember that dark sanding dust may get caught in the pores of a light wood.

A few years ago somebody asked about shaping knife handle with wood carving knives. He was adviced to use wooden pins, to not damage his carving knives on a metal pin.

Just go for it

Carbon fiber rod, or Micarta/Garolite rod works better. The only handle pins I use are on Japanese blades and that is a hard type of bamboo.

I've been using micarta pins a lot lately, and really like the results. In college I worked in a woodwork's shop, mostly sanding and helping with installations, but I like the way a dark and light wood contrast on each other. Just wondering how it would hold up on a handle.

Thank you gentlemen.

I bet a red oak or walnut dowel would work great and would hold up just as well as they do as handle scales.

I have turned some scraps of cocobolo, ebony and skateboard decks for pins. They have worked well but getting them sized correctly was a bit of a pain. (Using a grizzly mini metal lathe)

Thom, I made my own pins as well.
I got a tip on how to do that here on this forum.
It's a piece of flat steel with holes in it.
(6mm 5,5mm 5mm 4,5mm 4mm 3,5mm 3mm)
On the one side I roughed up the edges with a dremel cut off disc, the other side is smooth.
I grind wood in to a roughly shaped wooden dowel, then clamp in in my drill press and carefully press it trough the holes in the steel, one size at the time. (Rough side up)

I hope my words make sence. If I get some shoptime this weekend I'll make some pics

I can t found my tool for that right now in my shop to take picture....there was are tool to make square wood or micarta round .Tool is spinning in chuck of lathe and you just push wood in hole of tool from back side of chuck ...

I made one out of mild steel. If it gets worn out I'll make one out of hardenable steel but tho old one still works at the moment
