Wood ID?

I recently tore down an old chain link fence at the back of my lot. It was overgrown with weeds, vines and woody things. This stump had a trunk that had been cut about 3' off the ground. I sawed the trunk down and then took the axe to what was left. The heartwood was an incredibly bright red (almost blood red). Any ideas on what kind of wood this is?

At first I thought maybe cedar but there's no piney smell and the bark did not look like cedar. I am just kinda curious...

Box Elder is a very common "volunteer" or "weed" tree in Illinois. Sometimes has some interesting grain and often red heartwood. However if it has berries that look like little blue pills, then it is a HardWood Tree and you need a prescription for it.
