Looking for help identifying a couple boards given to me. These have been stored in a heated garage for 20+ years and ends are not sealed so assuming it is dry. Both pieces are very heavy for their size. I have thoughts on what they are, but want to get some outside input. Thanks in advance for any help.

The bottom piece has a little bit of a desert ironwood vibe to it. Cocobolo would fit too though. Desert ironwood has a very tight grain, cocobolo is more open.

I am almost positive the bottom is Kingwood. I have a lot of it, and it looks identical. The top one made me think of bubinga, but some straight grain kingwood, and its cousin cocobolo, look about the same.

i would agree but all the Kingwood i have or seen is purple...thus the Bubinga. i have some going onto a 12 inch bowie/chopper/camp knife out in the shop from Gilmers..

When I looked I thought Rosewood since both look like different Rosewood planks I've had over the years. I worked with lots of what the locals called Rosewood when I lived in Guatemala back in early '90s. After Stacy said Kingwood, I looked at some photos of Kingwood since I've never had any of that wood, and the Kingwood photos I saw looked just like the Rosewood I worked with in Guatemala. Reading more I find they are closely related.

These "ID this wood" threads are always interesting.

Para-Kingwood has the deeper purple and magenta tones. Love it for a beautiful, straight-grain wood.
