wood identification need help

i have this peice of wood i found when i moved into my new house.i think it looks like maple but im not sure. i am in the process of stabilizing a few small peices right now to see how they work. im am including pics of raw and cut.

I've worked with lots of maple and I have to agree. From the photographs it appears to be Curly Maple.

Almost surely curly maple.The flame pattern in the center is very typical of this wood.

Hey Mike, I thought when i first saw this thread that that looked like some curly maple and thought of cutting wood at my grandparents place in Michigan and finding TONS of that stuff... pain in the butt to split.:)

THEN I looked at your location and saw that you live in the Big City compared to my familly up there... They live in Clark Lake Not too far from you.

You are in the Middle of some gorgeous wood up there... My familly has been for years cutting and burning Box elder and MOST of it is pure burl.

Just look around up there! I am sure you will find tons of good wood lying around up there just waiting to be made into handles..

Just a coincidence, but a fun one...

i found some box elder burl(lots actually) that i want to stabilize for handles. im going to have lots and lots so if your interested let me know and ill give you some. im going to have about 1000 scales worth extra. i love michigan i can find lots of different species to toy around with
