Hi,
any thoughts on wood inlay ?

i heard about shrinkage/cracks/chips on wooden scales which is why the good folks at Plaza Cutlery recommend me to get a micarta Small Seb first.

Any reports of such problems from CRK's inlaid wood scales ?

What's your favourite wood inlay ?

I am looking at :
1. African Blackwood
2. Ebony

Seems like African Blackwood is slightly better than ebony:

"Comments
African blackwood is reported to be superior to Ebony for the manufacture of woodwind instruments because of its oily nature and high tolerance to fluctuations in climatic conditions. It is reported to respond almost as well as metals to tapping for screw threads."

A sebenza isn't a throwing knife. The handle isn't a hammer too. It is just the perfect user knife, that you can carry almost everywhere.
If your inlay sebenza falls of your pocket, the woods choosed by CRK are solid enough to resist to the shock.
I have an small annual sebenza and a Mnandi. The wood protects the titanium from scratches better than nothing :p

The camel thorn is a very beautifull wood for a Mnandi.
Desert ironwood is very nice on a sebenza .

I've got the African Blackwood and like it allot, actually borders on love :D

It's a couple of years old, no cracks and I don't ever expect any. Don't forget their lifetime warranty...everything about this knife is top of the line. Get it, you'll be happy.

If, IF, anything were to happen to the wood inlays, CRK would probably fix them for free or a very small fee. I doubt anything would happen to them anyways. I thought you were set on a small Micarta, but get whatever you like more.

Here is a page with a LOT of different Sebenzas, including many inlayed smalls. Check it out.

edit: Whoops, all links of TNK lead to their homepage. To find CRK, hit "By Brand", then go to Chris Reeve Knives. Sorry about that :o

Yes, I already got the micarta.
But the next one will be an African Blackwood or ebony.

This is the micarta small sebenza, it opens and closes much easier with the pocket clip removed.

EDC an African Blackwood small sebbie and no problems whatsoever (and I'm not typically easy on my EDC items!)

Get the one you like, they're all made to last

You can try weakening your clip tension. Please do it at your own risk and remove the clip from the knife first! The sebenza is not an inexpensive knife afterall.

Not to beat a dead horse or anything...but the wood inlays are pretty tuff. They are stabilized, i.e. impregnated with a polymer resin to resist strinkage and cracks. Works pretty good. I've used my L.E. wood Sebs in water and harsh envirornments where the wood has been subjected to cold and then warm tempertures without problem. If you are going to wash your Sebbie, I'd suggest doing it in room temp water. It may help to avoid problems if there are any to be had.

Cool, thanks to all.
Put a deposit on African Blackwood Small Sebenza.

I am LOVING the CRK more and more each day as compared to my WHK.

I just like the idea that I can really use my knife for rugged stuff, scratch it, and still be able to send it back for a polish.

Oh, CRK's Sean said I could also polish my Mnandi. So I am keeping my order for a Mammoth Ivory for the mnandi. They won't be able to ship until October, 2006. So the timing is excellent.

I have offcially labelled myself as a CRK-fan.

That blackwood will be sweet! But you ain't got it bad yet...just wait.....
