Will using min-wax wood hardener to stabilize wood that has some moisture still present in the wood work? Or would this be a waste of time and money. The other day I was lucky enough to acquire a fow pices of exotic wood some red malee about a 4-5 pound chunk, tulip wood, figured walnut and a 2-3 pound block of coco bolo some really nice wood in trade for a knife blade that he will be completing the finished knife well I haven’t had any problems with any of wood except the malee. The guy I got it from said it was a year old and shouldn’t have any problems with it so I had it cut and its been in the house for a week and half a it starting to crack around the edges so I put it in Ziploc bags and I am going to remove and replace small wood chips every couple days and do the waiting thing. I am experimenting I did put a 1”x1”x4”a mason jar covered it with wood hardener ad stabilize it like I have done before with some maple I am just hoping that I haven’t wasted a nice piece of wood and seven dollars worth of wood hardener, oh yea one last thing should I leave the wood that is in the Ziploc bags in the house in the cool of the air-conditioning or in the warm humid garage or put them in the garage. Any advice would be helpful

the compound you want is called poly ethiline glycol(spelling?)
known to woodworkers as PEG. It is used by turners and carvers to stabize green wood. I'll hunt through my catalogues and see if I can find a supplier. (that will take a while though) You might try a search of wood carving and turning sites.

note;
when drying wood, always seal the ends. so that the wood drys slowly average drying time is one year per inch of thickness. you have to keep the humidity up, if the outside drys befor the inside, it stops moving the inside keeps shrinking and will blow apart.(it's called honey combing)

I am not framiliar with the minwax product.

try taking the pieces you have already cut
seal the end grain,
place them in a paper bag
place the paper bag in a plastic bag, but do not seal it.
put this in your hot garage for the next 2 months
remove plastic bag leave paper bag, put in closet for 2 more months
remove paper bag and let air for another month

I hope this is helpful, EE

I also use it when I am trapping I us a spray bottle and spray it over the dirst to keep it from freezing down I also use it as a base for my buck lures.I did not know it could be used in the knife trade

I've got some red and brown mallee. It is some of the most beautiful wood I have ever seen. Does your red mallee have a thin green line between the red and light brown areas?

I sent the brown to Mike Ludeman at WSSI (http://www.stabilizedwood.com/) and it turned out very nice. I'm still waiting for the red to get below 12% moisture. If your red mallee is anything like mine I would be very careful with it. It would be a shame if it did not turn out the way you want.

BTW, I've seen different spelling for mallee and I have no idea which is correct.
