Why would some woods be premium and others not? Any idea? I can understand Mammoth ivory, but why are some woods more valuable?

different properties and availability. Also the quality of the particular piece of wood will effect cost. And of course finishes as well

One of my favorites, desert ironwood, has some harvesting restrictions on it now. Luckily, I have seen it on some Mnandis I have been looking at, still in the MSRP range of most other models, not a higher priced insert.

Rarity of the wood (could be due to harvest restrictions, import restrictions, not many of the trees, not many suitably-sized pieces), rarity of the grain pattern (more highly figured or patterned grains are unusual, and some species tend to have more knots/burls/figured pieces than others), and difficulty of the wood to work (some woods are more likely to split or chip; curly grained pieces tend to be more difficult to work with than straight-grained pieces of the same type).

So supply, prettiness, and workability.
