The woods they show are for making pens. Pens have to be made by turning on a lathe. So, the woods shown there are woods suitable for turning. Notice, for example, the absence of Snakewood.
So, it's a good reference, but keep in mind that it is somewhat incomplete.
Nice reference...I am going to be making my first knife (well the handle...going to get a pre-made blade) and I am trying to find the wood I want to use. I am thinking of using osage orange which is common here (the "hedge apple" tree of the midwest is actually osage orange) and am thinking of inlaying some stone in it as well....still in the early development stages.
