I was looking around on some wood sites for exotic handle materials and wasn't sure what sizes they were talking about. The sizes were all given in fractions, 5/4, 8/4 and so on. Is 5/4 1 1/2" x 1"? I've seen this before and never paid much attention to it. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

the four, for example 1/4, is one quarter. so 5/4 is 5 quarters, or 1 1/4". it usually refers to the thickness in the wood.

Thanks. I meant to put 1 1/4" x 1" ,but my computer has a mind of it's own. Thanks for the reply.

Just remember 5/4, 6/4, and 8/4 is the thickness in the rough. So if you get milled or surfaced 5/4 stock it will come to you 1" thick, 6/4 is 1 1/4" thick etc.
Often times if you get 8/4 stock in the rough (or 5/4 or 6/4) it may come very rough, and could actually be 2 3/8" thick at one end and 2" thick at the other. It could be plump enough to net 2" thick, but the mill shoots for a net thickness of 1 3/4" after surface planing. So- 8/4 material s2s
(surfaced 2 sides) is 1 3/4 thick. Sorry for the ramble.
