Where would i get some fairly nice wood about 85 inches in length and 3 inches wide? I'm looking for something that if not already dark i could dye really dark. I'm making a scythe for holloween because i couldnt find one that big and one that wasnt really crappy, i'm gonna be on stilts so i need it to be able to take weight in case i lose my balance :D

~Home Depot, Lowes etc.

As for the dye. Soak in Tannic Acid for a day or two. Then soak in a solution of Iron salt for a day or two. It will be PURELY black :)

Good luck.

Most specialty wood stores sell exotic foreign and domestic hardwoods in that length.Home Depot and the like should have something you can use like oak, hickory,or some other hardwood.

would the black finish even work on pine? that's pretty much the only thing i'd be able to get around here... or maybe eucalyptus. thanks for the advice though

Man I'm picturing that and ROTFLMAO :D That is going to be one heck of a big scythe (how did you know how to spell this;) ) I have one that I still use to this day( boy I sure would HATE to have to clear a 40 with that thing ).It was here at the farm when we bought the place 13 yrs ago. If you need a couple of pics for reference let me know and I'll send you a few. BTW , good luck on the stilts:)

thanks david, i've been practicing quite a bit so hopefully i wont be too bad  (knock on wood) but that'd be pretty cool if i could get a few detailed pictures of the grips, and the reason i knew how to spell scythe is because i read too much :o

The method I prescribed will work on ANY naturual material (as far as I'm aware). To save on collecting massive amounts of acorns and lemon juice however, go with spraypaint, a black sharpie, or some dye at walmart.

I don't know how real you want this sytche to be.... You could get a 1" diameter pine dowel at a homedepot or hardware store cheap though, then just spray paint it. If it weren't for your 'holding weight' requirement, I'd just use black PVC.

the reason i want 3" is because i'm going to try to warp and contour it, the blade is going to be out of aluminum probably, and thanks for the advice again!

So by warp and contour you mean through the removal of wood such as carving or sanding it down?
If you use thinner wood you could steam bend it or just heat it up over a gas stove and shape it.
