What do you guys do to prevent them wood scales or stag scales from cracking over time?

In my case I put little bit of mineral oils on my stag handles every 6 months.

But I'm not so sure about the wood.

I would like to know what everyone else does.
Thanks.

I put ren wax on my wood, bone, and ivory covers. For textured stag I use a little oil every so often. I live in humid Texas so I don’t have too many issues with materials drying out.

I see mineral oil suggested on stag elk and bone often, but ive also read on this forum from a cutler that fixes old knives, that it softens these materials and ruins them over years. not right away but long term.

I'm in the wet deep south never had any bone, stag, elk, wood etc dry out on me. so I do nothing to them. if I was, id be more inclined to try some sort of ren wax or a more durable wax that is used on similar materials that can handle constant touching and rubbing and that won't harm the material, to protect them.
