Can I use my wood stove for heat treating? I took one of the big 1095 rasps I have and set it in on a bed of coals last night and she was glowing in a matter of minutes. Thanks

An almost identical question was asked a while back. The short answer is no.
The conditions are not controlled enough. It could be used to anneal ,but doing a HT would be unwise,if even possible. You would have to add a blower and other things to get the heat up enough to HT.Much easier to build a simple forge.

Stacy doesn't know , he's not a metallurgist ! HAHAHA Actually I have done it -however - very difficult to control .A very cold day is needed to get good draft ,but there are still limitations .For something like annnealing a file it can actually work. BTW I'm in Sullivan Co and at least one other member 'vallimas ' is in Orange.

That's good to know. Give Lessons? HaHa. I live in Middletown & work out of Walden for the Telephone Co.

I tried to heat treat some 1095 in a small homemade woodstove, put a blower
in through front door and let it rip, at 800 F the stove was dull red and the sides were starting to bulge, I shut it down quickly didn't even come close to critical heat.

Wayne isn't a metallurgist either, but he has discovered the problem.
Merry Christmas mete.

I guess I am a meta-llurgist ( beyond alloys)

you can probably hear my anvil ring your so close.I'm still a greenhorn but if you want to come by and check out a kmg in person or the forge setup I'm usually home after work and on weekends.
