Resale stores such as GoodWill can have various items made from interesting wood. I picked up a folder cover that I'm pretty sure is padauk. I had bookends from Pakistan that made a very good handle. Impoverished as I am I keep my eyes open for opportunities like this.
Another thing to watch for are the ironwood carvings. Last knife show I was at there was a swap meet going on next door. Found an ironwood carving for $10 that would yield 4 blocks.
Dick is this some of the same stuff you sent me? If you're going to cut all that sap wood off like you have marked in the pics ....I would like some of that. Thanks Larry
Dick I like the curly, but I like that yellow sap stuff too. Your curly stuff looks similiar to my piece here..... Altho that tiger stripe is pretty cool as well.
Passed by my local cell phone dealership last year and they were throwing away some furniture. I scarfed up some of the prettiest fiddleback maple you ever saw from the dumpster! I was amazed.
The wood they have listed as "premium" is really freakin nice. Good place to get premo African blackwood and ebony. If you look now they're a little low on the best stuff because I just cleaned them out. But give them a few days...
Some freshly cut cocobolo I got from them:
I consider that to be good quality wood (it turns red a few days after being cut). The cost is good, the quality is good. I like to let it sit around a long time before I use it so it is totally dry- but that's pretty well compatible with my process too, (I'm slow)...
I picked up about 20 lbs from the local premium hardwood floor supplier for nothing, they actually thanked me for picking up all the pieces the forklift had scratchedGot some really nice walnut and bocote and some crazy stuff. One that looks like ebony haven't checked it
